Building Good Houses: Improving Living Standards in China

On the 18th, the State Council Information Office held a press conference in the series of themed news conferences titled 'Starting the 'Fifteenth Five-Year Plan' with a Strong Start'. A relevant official from the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development introduced that improving the living standards of the people is key to building 'good houses'.

What constitutes a 'good house'? It is one that is safe, comfortable, green, and smart. How to build a good house? It involves advancing from good standards, good design, good materials, good construction, and good maintenance throughout the entire life cycle.

What are good standards? Good standards are those that the people consider good.

The official stated that by seriously listening to the public's opinions on improving living conditions, the housing quality requirements have been enhanced in 14 aspects.

The conference also introduced that in response to public concerns about low floors, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development will raise the minimum floor height standard from the previous 2.8 meters to 3 meters. To address the issue of elderly people climbing stairs, the new standards propose that elevators be installed in residential buildings above the 4th floor. In order to ensure child safety, the height of railings on balconies, corridors, and all other open-air areas will be uniformly increased to no less than 1.2 meters.
