Liu Baosong: The Pioneering Eye Surgeon Transforming Vision in China

In a human eye with a diameter of only 24 millimeters, he uses a surgical knife as a pen and decades of deep cultivation as ink to record the journey of China's ophthalmic medicine from catch-up to the forefront. With a surgery lasting less than 3 minutes, he has restored sight to hundreds of thousands of patients. Through his original technology, he has opened the door to international academic circles and built a ladder for the growth of Chinese ophthalmic talent, using his sincere heart to benefit his hometown, creating a highland of ophthalmic medicine rooted in Central Plains and radiating across the country.

He is Liu Baosong, the founder and CEO of Sharp Vision Eye Hospital Group, and the President of Zhengzhou Sharp Vision Ophthalmic Hospital. A man who rose from a small county in central Henan to become a benchmark figure in the field of ophthalmology in China, and who integrates his personal ideals into the waves of the times, a doctor who practices the initial aspiration of 'letting everyone enjoy clear vision' throughout his life.

少年立鸿鹄：From Rural Henan to the Pursuer of Ophthalmic Light

In 1967, Liu Baosong was born into an ordinary family in Ruixian County, Henan Province. In the 1970s and 1980s, China was suffering from a lack of medical resources, which was a deep pain in the memory of a generation. Especially ophthalmic treatment, in vast rural areas, was almost a blank. Young Liu Baosong witnessed his neighbors fall into darkness due to eye diseases, and they were trapped by vision problems for life because of the lack of money for treatment and nowhere to seek medical help. Those cloudy and losing luster eyes became the deepest touch in his heart.

"To learn medicine and cure the eyes of the people." This simple idea took root in the heart of young Liu Baosong. In 1985, he firmly decided to take the exam for the medical department of Henan Medical University (now Zhengzhou University Medical College), and thus embarked on the road of walking with light. After graduating from university in 1989, he entered the Beijing Higher Medical Specialized School Ophthalmology Department, and in the practice of the clinical front line, he realized that ophthalmology is a subject that requires ultimate accuracy and lifelong learning. In order to truly change the backward situation of ophthalmology in China, one must stand on a higher platform and master the cutting-edge technology.

In 1991, Liu Baosong was admitted to Capital Medical University with excellent grades, becoming the first ophthalmology clinical postgraduate at Beijing Tongren Hospital, and studying under Professor Wang Guanglu, a famous expert in retinal diseases in our country. Beijing Tongren Hospital is known as the "all-inclusive aircraft carrier of Chinese ophthalmology". Here, he deeply cultivated ophthalmology clinical and academic research, treated each treatment and each surgery as an opportunity to polish his skills, and witnessed the huge gap between domestic cataract treatment and the advanced level in the world.

术业攀高峰：Defining China's International Height in Ophthalmology with Original Technology

"The progress of medicine has never been to follow conventions, but to find a better solution in millions of clinical practices." This is the credo Liu Baosong has been adhering to for over thirty years of clinical work.

The core of cataract surgery is to粉碎and remove the cloudy lens by ultrasonic emulsification and implant an artificial lens. Traditional ultrasonic emulsification surgery has problems such as high ultrasonic energy consumption, high risk of corneal endothelial damage, and complex surgical steps, which requires extremely high skill from doctors and also limits the popularization of the technology in the grassroots. Since 1996, Liu Baosong has been thinking: Can we create a safer, more efficient, and more easily popularized Chinese method? After two years of clinical polishing and repeated verification, in 1998, Liu Baosong officially invented the Cataract Apex Pre-pulpotomy Technique (CAP). This original technology subverts the operation logic of traditional cataract surgery, reduces the use of ultrasonic energy through pre-pulpotomy, reduces surgical complications, and greatly simplifies the surgical process. More proudly, this technology achievement was published in the authoritative magazine of cataract refractive surgery in the United States, "JCRS", becoming a few original surgical technology of China recognized by the international ophthalmic community and letting the innovative achievements of Chinese ophthalmologists stand on the world stage.

Now, the Apex Pre-pulpotomy Technique has been widely applied in the global ophthalmic field, nearly 30,000 ophthalmologists have learned and used this technology, and Liu Baosong himself has compressed the duration of a standardized cataract surgery from the industry's common 10-20 minutes to 1-3 minutes. Over 34 years in practice, he has successfully completed more than 200,000 cataract and intraocular lens implantation surgeries, creating an industry record of zero major medical accidents in the field of cataract surgery.
