Revolutionizing Kitchen Air Quality with Mi Smart Extractor
Breathable health is the foundation of a good life, yet kitchen fumes often pose a hidden threat. We dream of a home where the stove is bubbling with oil, the living room is filled with family chatter, without the din of machines or the stinging smell of smoke, only fresh air and laughter.
This dream became a reality at AWE 2026. On March 12, Sohu founder, Chairman of the Board, and CEO, and physics doctor, Zhang Yansheng, brought the "All Things Have a Reason" program to the Mi Smart Extractor booth at AWE. He used physics formulas to decode the fluid mechanics of the Mi Smart Extractor, revealing how technology can help kitchens say goodbye to smoke and PM2.5 particles.

Zhang Yansheng marveled at the revolutionary nature of the Mi Smart Extractor, which improves the smoke removal effect through dynamic particle collection technology. Traditional hoods only suck away some of the smoke, but the Mi Smart Extractor, through the combined action of four low-pressure vortices, rearward high-speed airflow, and barrier curtains above the pot, can remove different types of pollutants such as PM2.5 and PM10 from the smoke.
Difference between "Extractor" and "Smoke Hood"
The kitchen, where we create delicious food and warmth, has become a place of dread for many due to the overwhelming smoke.
Many people dislike cooking because they can't stand the smell of smoke on their clothes and hair after cooking. More alarmingly, the "high-heat stir-frying" commonly used in Chinese cuisine produces a large amount of PM2.5. Once these tiny particles are inhaled, they can lead to a higher incidence of lung diseases.
Data shows that China's lung disease incidence is six times higher than that of Europe and America. In 2023, China's indoor air quality standard shows that indoor PM2.5 should be less than 50μg/m³, and kitchen smoke is one of the main sources of indoor air pollution.
Traditional smoke hoods use negative pressure suction technology, relying on fans to form negative pressure at the suction port to create suction to draw in smoke. This can be categorized as "passive exhaust." This method has a fixed suction area, and when the smoke rises too fast or covers a wide area, it is easy to escape outside the suction area, leading to "smoke escape" and "irritating smoke."
The biggest difference between the Mi Smart Extractor and a general smoke hood is that it not only removes visible smoke in the kitchen but also absorbs the smell of smoke, creating a comfortable and open cooking environment, and eliminating the hassle of daily cleaning for users. This allows users to enjoy cooking while also having fresh air.
In detail, this is achieved through three core technologies of Xiaomi: dynamic particle collection technology, high-speed noise reduction technology, and oil-free mesh no-cleaning technology. It is the synergy of these three core technologies that allows Xiaomi to truly make the leap from "smoke hood" to "extractor."

Zhang Yansheng reveals the fluid mechanics of the Mi Smart Extractor
The core of the Mi Smart Extractor is the dynamic particle collection technology, which uses a combination of three airflows to control smoke, PM2.5 particles, and smoke smell, becoming an innovative solution in the industry.
In the live broadcast, Zhang Yansheng shared an in-depth and interesting explanation of the physical principles contained in the dynamic particle collection technology, combining aerodynamics knowledge.

He said that kitchen smoke is a headache because high-temperature Chinese cooking causes uncracked edible oil and carbonized food to form ultra-fine particles of 0.5~2.5 μm. According to Stokes' law, they are difficult to settle due to the air resistance being greater than gravity and can only remain suspended in the air for a long time.
When cooking, the air above the pot expands and rises sharply, and gradually spreads horizontally, forming an inverted cone-shaped "hot plume." When the "hot plume" rises to the height of 0.8m where the traditional smoke hood is installed, the diffused area has reached four times the area of the stove, and the top kinetic energy is weak and unstable. At this point, even the tiny air currents generated by stir-frying, walking, or even breathing can easily scatter this fragile smoke, causing smoke particles and odor molecules to escape continuously, leading to smoke-filled kitchens.

Traditional smoke hoods usually adopt a high-position "passive static pressure suction" scheme, which is not only small in area but also shallow, making it difficult to completely absorb the continuously diffused smoke. In contrast, the Mi Smart Extractor uses a four-vortex collection gas vortex scheme, setting two groups of adjacent counter-rotating gas vortices on each stove to improve collection efficiency.
After using the "double vortex net bag" in the horizontal direction to gather particles, the vertical direction further discharges smoke through rearward high-speed airflow.
For the occasional escaping smoke particles, the Mi Smart Extractor deploys the third line of defense - a barrier curtain to prevent escape, locking the smoke particles inside through physical isolation.
The "low-position active flow field control" strategy proposed by the Mi Smart Extractor breaks through the bottleneck through three different airflow control solutions in the lower, middle, and upper sections of the "hot plume" generated during cooking: source vortex capture, rearward high-speed instant extraction, and top curtain prevention of escape. No longer relying on passive suction, but instead actively reconstructing the macroscopic flow field of the space with overwhelming kinetic energy.
The temperature of science and technology, hidden in the kitchen

Of course, the experience of the Mi Smart Extractor, different from that of traditional smoke hoods, is not just about "smoke removal." It also allows users to focus on enjoying the fun of cooking and makes daily maintenance easier. These thoughtful experiences come from Xiaomi's high-speed noise reduction technology and easy-to-clean no-cleaning design.
Many netizens wonder if the Mi Smart Extractor, with such high flow rate and strong suction, will also be very noisy? Xiaomi's vice president of the ecological chain, Yu Xinwang, introduced in the live broadcast that Xiaomi has adopted multiple silent design methods for noise reduction.
For example, the wind wheel draws on biomimicry design from the aviation field, with many evenly distributed saw teeth on the blades, which greatly reduces noise while maintaining strong suction, allowing the cooking process to be quiet and undisturbed.
Behind this is the biomimicry design that scatters the noise from the originally regular radiation into multiple sound sources, allowing sound waves to cancel each other out and break up large vortices into small ones, reducing noise energy.
In terms of the pain point of the traditional smoke hood's suction attenuation after long-term use, the Mi Smart Extractor's easy-to-clean no-cleaning design addresses this from two aspects: first, the surface of the wind wheel blade is covered with an oil-repellent coating to reduce oil stain adhesion; second, it is equipped with a high-speed motor and high-speed airflow technology, and the high-speed airflow will form an air film on the surface of the wind wheel, blocking oil droplets from adhering.
Zhang Yansheng explained that a higher speed can actually produce huge centripetal force, and the size of the centripetal force is proportional to the square of the speed. Under this huge centripetal force, oil droplets will be quickly thrown off.
To demonstrate the ease of cleaning, the Xiaomi team also prepared spicy sauce with oil, which was painted on the Mi Smart Extractor. The test showed that the oil would quickly drop off, without strong adhesion, and could be wiped clean with a simple wipe.
From smoke removal to noise reduction, to easy cleaning, every technical breakthrough of the Mi Smart Extractor is supported by a profound knowledge system. Zhang Yansheng explained in the scene with physical formulas, such as how to use aerodynamics to control smoke, how to use biomimicry design for noise reduction, and how to use the principle of centrifugal force to remove oil stains.
