Chen Shifu's Journey: Passion in Furniture Repair Discover the Passion in Chen Shifu's Furniture Repair Journey
At 7 AM, as the morning sun begins to brighten, the road to Shanghai is bustling with traffic. It's the peak of the morning rush hour, and people are bracing themselves against the cold wind, rushing to their jobs with renewed vigor.

Among them is 42-year-old Chen Shifu, who, unlike others, shows no signs of fatigue or exhaustion. Instead, his face is radiant, filled with vitality.
How does one maintain enthusiasm in a daily grind? Chen Shifu's story offers us the answer.

In 2019, Chen Shifu joined the Wanshi platform, marking the beginning of his 8th year in furniture repair. At the age of 30, he was burdened with hundreds of thousands of yuan in debt after his store closed and a failed farming venture. Desperate, he turned to his brother for help in 2017, learning the art of furniture repair in Shanghai.
Chen Shifu vividly recalls his first repair job: "It was a redwood furniture that had been damaged, and I spent over an hour fixing two small spots." Regretfully, he adds, "With my current skills, I could have finished it in 15 to 20 minutes."

Despite the need to use chemical adhesives and paints with strong odors for color matching, which can be harmful to health over time, Chen Shifu does not seem to mind. "After all, can it be worse than poverty? Can it be worse than being poor? If you can't earn money, it won't matter even if you live for another few years," he rationalizes.
He is extremely passionate about the quality of his repairs and has developed his own set of standards for quality control. "Firstly, you have to be satisfied with it yourself, and then let the customer check for any flaws. If the repair is good, it should be invisible to the naked eye."
With his exquisite skills and extensive experience, Chen Shifu was selected as a "Gold Medal Repairman" on the platform. As of November 2025, he has completed over 5,000 repair services.
This wealth of service data and qualifications have turned into Chen Shifu's "golden brand," ensuring a steady stream of customers. Excellent service brings in continuous orders, leading to a win-win situation where Chen Shifu enjoys both a good reputation and a substantial income.

"You see, I've earned nearly a million, with an average monthly income of 12,000 to 13,000 yuan. Occasionally, I do some work offline and make a few thousand more, so I can maintain an average of about 20,000 yuan a month," Chen Shifu says proudly.
Since making a name for himself in furniture repair, Chen Shifu has not only paid off several hundred thousand yuan of debt within two years but also bought a new house and a new car. In the "A Day in Wanshi" documentary, Chen Shifu's face is always filled with confidence, as furniture repair has become more than just a means of making a living—it's a skill he's mastered.
In the video, Chen Shifu receives an order to repair a solid wood headboard damaged by a cigarette burn. The circular wound on the table surface is particularly noticeable.
He skillfully mixes sawdust with glue to fill the broken spot, "When repairing anything, you need to smooth it out first. If there are wood grains, you use a knife to outline the grains, and the repair effect will be better." After smoothing it out, he uses paint to match the color, "Try to get as close to the original color as possible, and only after painting can it blend in perfectly."

Chen Shifu says that this basic theory is the experience he has accumulated over the years in practice, which seems simple but is actually the result of six or seven years of summary. It includes the judgment of the degree of damage and the choice of repair method, as well as the use of tools, all of which are inseparable from thousands of times of practice.

Based on this theory, nearly all the damaged furniture Chen Shifu repairs can be restored to its original state, and the numerous positive reviews he receives are proof of this.

When customers leave a five-star review, Chen Shifu is overjoyed, "When the customer is satisfied, I am happy." Receiving the corresponding return on his efforts is a very rewarding feeling.
"For example, in the furniture repair I do, or in installation work, we should focus on providing excellent service to our customers," he says.
Staying passionate about one's work is not easy, but it is definitely not out of reach. In Chen Shifu's view, as long as you take things to heart and treat them seriously, success is inevitable.
