Design Insight: The Art of Untraced Design

On November 11, 2025, the "Search for Influential Creators in the Design Industry - Cover Character City Salon," co-hosted by Interior Design Chinese Edition and Schneider Electric, came to Suzhou. A special dialogue was also held at the private bar space of Nick Design Office as part of this event. The space was enveloped in dark tones, with a sophisticated mix of black and gray exuding a sense of high-level tranquility and comfort. The flickering flames in the fireplace cast warm shadows on the walls. In this atmosphere filled with Zen and warmth, Nick, the president of the Suzhou Decoration Design Industry Association and founder of Nick Design Office, shared his nearly four decades of design experience and his unique insights into "Untraced Design".

Cultural Imbued: Transformation from Northern Roughness to the Delicate Suzhou Style

This design dialogue began with Nick's deep understanding and unique interpretation of Suzhou culture. As a northerner, Nick found his soul's home in Suzhou.

"In the mid-1980s when I first came to Suzhou, I was deeply moved by the city's delicacy," Nick recalls, a trace of the young man riding a bicycle through the Suzhou alleys still visible in his eyes, "Northern roads are wide and open, but Suzhou's alleys are sometimes only wide enough for one person to pass through. This contrast fascinated me. From the rough wilderness to the lanes with bridges and streams, this is a completely new world."

This fascination led him to delve deep into the veins and tissues of Suzhou: "The fallen leaves in autumn cover the cobblestone paths, the street-side noodle shops are steaming, and the coal stove in the people's homes sends up wisps of smoke... These life scenes formed my first impression of Suzhou and became the source of my design inspiration."

Over nearly four decades of immersion, this northerner has become a connoisseur of Suzhou culture. His design has also shifted from early Western trends to a deep dive into local culture. "When everyone was chasing Western minimalism, I quickly realized that we can't go to Italy or Europe to learn. We should use an international perspective to look at Suzhou and use Suzhou's wisdom to create spaces with an international vision."
